MILE Literacy Review With MSDE Promoted by UMD College of Education

In a recent article voicing support for the five pillars of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, UMD's College of Education featured MILE's work completing a statewide literacy review with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The article highlighted the review of elementary literacy instruction, project collaborators, and the efforts of MILE leadership that brought the review to fruition.

"Under the direction of MSDE, MILE Director and UMD Associate Professor Donald J. Bolger, MILE Co-Director and Morgan State Associate Professor Simone Gibson Ph.D. ’09, and MILE Executive Director and UMD Associate Clinical Professor Maggie Polizos Peterson Ph.D. ’14) and their team recruited 13 literacy experts that visited 10% of public elementary schools in each Maryland county and the City of Baltimore in spring 2024. With the help of an additional 13 research associates, the MILE team also convened focus groups of elementary principals and educators and reviewed literacy plans and practices.

The article also spotlights projects by MILE's individual Pillar Members. This includes work by Education Pillar Member Christy Tirrell-Corbin, leader of the Maryland Early EdCorp Registered Apprentice Program, which "offers paid on-the-job training within public and private early childhood programs dedicated to serving children and families with complex needs related to language barriers, poverty, or disability." Additionally, the article includes Professional Development Pillar Member Drew S. Fagan's work as the Director of a doctoral program to "train PK-12 educators to support the success of the multilingual learners,"  Ed.D. in School System Leadership, Specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Dual Language Education.
