Board of Ed Applauds MILE Leadership’s Efforts to Advance Literacy Instruction

We are deeply grateful that not only did you bring your expertise to bear, but you scaled up in a moment of need
— Dr. Joshua Michael

At a recent Maryland State Board of Education meeting, MILE successfully hosted a stakeholder engagement session centered around its statewide literacy review in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). At the meeting, MILE Co-Directors DJ Bolger and Simone Gibson discussed MILE's findings and subsequent recommendations for improvement.

Prior to the session, Dr. Bolger and Dr. Gibson received recognition from Board President Dr. Joshua Michael. He praised their exceptional partnership as scholar-practitioners and their consequential roles as teacher educators in Maryland. "You are setting the pace for what true partnership looks like, what scholar-practitioners look like across the state" Dr. Michael stated, stressing their contributions to aligning teacher prep programs with The Science of Reading. Dr. Bolger and Dr. Gibson's leadership was highlighted as crucial in ensuring that teachers are prepared to provide effective literacy instruction.

...we are also speaking with likely the two leading teacher prep faculty who are training teachers across the state and ensuring that our students are receiving instruction that is aligned to The Science of Reading in teacher prep programs.
— Dr. Joshua Michael

This session reflects MILE's dedication to improving literacy education through collaboration and evidence-based practices. By aligning teacher prep programs with The Science of Reading, MILE is setting a new standard for literacy instruction while supporting both educators and students.
