Jade Wexler Shares Expertise on Struggling Readers with Education Week

Dr. Jade Wexler, MILE’s Associate Director for Research, is aware of the challenges many older students face with reading. As highlighted in a recent article from Education Week, Dr. Wexler, alongside literacy expert Tinaya York, points to a troubling trend revealed by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores—70 percent of 8th graders are reading below the proficient level as of 2024.

Her work and insights shed light on the urgent need for better support systems in education to ensure that all students, particularly those with learning difficulties, are given the tools they need to succeed.
