Dr. Simone Gibson Participates in the Reading League’s Annual Conference
At The Reading League's 8th annual conference, MILE Co-Director Dr. Simone Gibson participated in the panel "All Means All: The Intersection of SoR and Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Literacy Instruction," comprised of Drs. Altheria Caldera & Maria Murray, & the Educators of Color Conference Community.

The panel highlighted the research interests of Black and Latino scholars focused on the application of the Science of Reading for Black and Latino readers. Dr. Gibson participated as a member of the Educators of Color Conference Community alongside Martha Hernandez of Californians Together, SpeakYaTruth, Dr Endia Lindo, Dionna Latimer-Hearn of Respect the Dialect, Clarice Jackson of Black Literacy Matters, and Dr. Ale Babino.
Dr. Gibson's presentation underscored how numerous educators enhance the principles of the Science of Reading by incorporating cultural elements. It was crucial to stress the importance of leveraging students' cultural backgrounds when implementing evidence-based practices, ensuring that the learning process is meaningful for educators and students.
The 8th annual conference of The Reading League was held from October 15th to 17th, 2024 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The conference featured panels, networking opportunities, and a keynote by Zaretta Hammond, Leveraging the Science of Reading for Liberatory Education.
