Professional Development Pillar Members and Affiliates Publish Study in International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism

Dr. Melinda Martin-Beltrán, Astrid Sierra, and Dr. Amanda Cataneo have published a new study in the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism. Titled "Exploring Diverse Educators’ Language Ideologies: How Lived Experiences Shape Understandings of Bilingual Education Goals," this study explores how the lived experiences of diverse educators inform their perspectives on the goals of dual language bilingual education (DLBE). This study provides important insights into how teacher educators and school leaders can build on teachers’ experiences to develop their understanding of the goals of DLBE.

Dr. Martin-Beltrán is the Associate Director of the Professional Development Pillar for MILE. Astrid Sierra is a current PhD candidate at UMD and a MILE member. Dr. Cataneo is the Program Manager of Professional Development for MILE. The three authors constitute part of a larger research team that partners with DLBE programs and collaborates to study DLBE pedagogies and practices across the region.  

This paper, part of an ongoing study of teachers and school leaders in DLBE programs, draws on data from classroom observations, interviews, and focus groups. It highlights the need to recognize educators' varied backgrounds in teacher education and professional development to advance equity in DLBE programs. Click below to read the full study.
