A Statement From Mile’s Co-directors: “Need for Unwavering Support of Our Students Persists as an Enduring Constant.”

In these tumultuous and politically challenging times, the role of educators has never been more crucial. As advocates for the rights and futures of our students, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to equity, justice, and inclusion. While the political landscape may be shifting, the need for unwavering support of our students persists as an enduring constant.

Teachers, you are the cornerstone of transformative change. You shape young minds, inspire futures, and advocate for the resources and opportunities that every student deserves. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that you continue to champion your students' rights—whether by advocating for equitable access to quality education, ensuring that diverse voices are represented in the curriculum, or standing firm in the protection of safe and inclusive spaces for all learners.

The MILE Literacy Research Symposium, scheduled for February 26, serves as a powerful illustration of how educators' and students’ experiences are brought to the forefront. This event highlights the strength of emerging researchers who, through collaboration with practitioners, breathe life into their research while elevating the voices and stories of those directly impacted. Their work exemplifies the transformative potential of combining rigorous scholarly inquiry with tangible real-world impact, fostering a bridge between knowledge and meaningful change.

As we continue to navigate these uncertain political times, it is essential to remember that your voice is a vital instrument for progress. The work we do at the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity is rooted in the belief that education is a fundamental right. Together, we stand united in the ongoing fight to protect and advance the needs of every student. Stay strong, stay committed, and persist in your pursuit of educational justice for all children and communities.

With unwavering solidarity,
The Directors of the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity
